What is Amazon FBA and how does it work?
FBA stands for Fulfilled by Amazon.
In short, Amazon allows third-party sellers like you to sell their products on Amazon Marketplace. Instead of you doing the heavy lifting, Amazon packages and ships the items to the customer.
Let me explain…
That’s what you do:
First, find the products you want to sell.
They then ship your items to one of Amazon’s fulfillment centers.
In the meantime, promote your product by creating images, listings and descriptions…..
Once you start selling, make sure Amazon still has your products in stock.
What does Amazon do?
Amazon inventories and sorts items as they come from the supplier.
When someone buys your product, Amazon packages and ships the order.
Every two weeks Amazon sends you money for the items you sell.
When a customer brings up a problem, Amazon solves it for you.
That’s it! But that’s not all…
What are the benefits of Amazon FBA?
Let’s highlight a few of them:
You don’t have to pick up, pack and ship products to every customer.
Amazon, a $100,000,000,000 company, offers you discounts on shipping.
They manage customer service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You can expand and grow at will without having to move to larger storage facilities.
Amazon can deliver your items within a few days in most countries.
Their offering is part of the Amazon Prime family, which now offers one-day delivery in the US as standard.
, what are the drawbacks?
Are there any drawbacks to Amazon FBA?
Yes, there are, but in my humble opinion they don’t outweigh the benefits of Amazon FBA. If you disagree, let me know in the comments section under instructions. Here’s the list:
The FBA is not free. Amazon charges you a referral fee for each sale. It varies between 3% and 18% depending on the product category.
Amazon charges a monthly account fee of $39.99 if you sell more than 40 items per calendar month; otherwise, the account is free.
A per-unit fee is charged when Amazon picks up, packs, ships and processes a customer’s order. In fact, shipping costs are based on the size and weight of your products. A detailed price overview can be found here.
The final fee Amazon charges is a small commission for each item you store in their warehouses. The idea is to keep enough inventory in Amazon’s fulfillment centers to fulfill your customers’ orders.
In addition to the costs mentioned above, there are other costs, or rather upfront investments, to consider when starting an Amazon FBA business, and we will look at these costs in the following sections.
How to sell on Amazon FBA:
Studies show that 70% of shoppers don’t go beyond the second page of search results on Amazon.
Given this percentage, your goal is to get on the first page of Amazon’s search results for a specific product keyword.
The best way to ensure this is to create a private label product when you sell the manufacturer’s products under your own brand (label) on Amazon.
Otherwise, you will have to sell thousands of different products or compete with market leaders in very crowded niches.
So what are the best products to sell on Amazon FBA?
1. Amazon FBA
Product Search How do you find a successful product?
I’ve never seen anyone share this strategy, so read on.
The idea is to find a niche product that is not yet saturated.
Go to the bestseller list on Amazon
On the left side, you will see all the product categories available on Amazon.
Given the nature of the products, the following categories are most appropriate for Amazon FBA’s operations. So choose the categories you feel most comfortable with.
Arts, crafts and sewing
Beauty and body care
Cell phones and accessories
Computers and accessories
Health and housekeeping
Home and kitchen
Kitchen and dining room
Garden, lawn and garden
Sports and outdoor activities
What’s the next step?
You must go to the last subcategory of the department. There are usually 3 or 4 levels of subcategories, so dig down to the end.
I love cars, so I chose the car category as an example. The last subcategory I’m interested in, and will give as an example, is that of cleaning kits.
As you can see, there are yellow numbers in the upper left corner of each product image. These numbers indicate the product’s position on the Amazon bestseller list.
In total the list contains the top 100 products, but for now we’ll only look at the top 30.
Look for products with 20 or fewer reviews.
Any of these products can be one of your winning products when you start an FBA business on Amazon.
Now take the most relevant keywords that describe the product by name and type them into the search bar on the Amazon homepage.
I use the DIY Automotive headlight polishing kit as an example.
In the results, you can see how much competition you have for that particular product.
So how do you know if this product could be a winner?
I will use the JungleScout extension to check my results.
They have a feature called Opportunity Score that combines data on demand, competition and quality to determine the potential of the product.
I want a score of at least 6, so I know the demand for the product is average and the competition is not too strong.
Now do the same process and find at least 5 products in the Amazon bestseller list. They may belong to different categories. The choice is yours.
Now you need to figure out how to stand out from the competition and find a manufacturer for your product.
A few ways your product can stand out:
Price (preferably lower)
Color (black, white…)
Size (plus minus)
Quantity (1, 2, …)
Free goodies (add something to the product that is not expensive, e.g. a bracelet)
User manual (e.g.
Additional Features (pen with flashlight)
Images (creative images, differentiate from similar products)
Design (improved product design with additional features)
Description (better headings, bullet points and detailed description than competitors)
Package Size (e.g. if competitors have 10 spatulas in a package, you can package 14 spatulas)
It is important to analyze your competitors and think about how your product can stand out.
Pick a few products and start looking for manufacturers!
2. Amazon FBA – Wholesale Suppliers
Despite the trade war with the United States, China remains the number one place to find a manufacturer for your products.
And the first choice remains Alibaba.
Go to Alibaba’s website and enter a few keywords describing your product in the search bar.
You will see several products that match the keywords you entered. I used a cleaning glove as an example.
Second, the golden rule is to look for niches of large producers, not commodities.
Let’s be clear: The big Chinese companies have a wide range, and if they don’t have something, they can usually make it.
The best way to find these great companies is to sort them by transaction level using the filter in the top right corner.
This way, you can exclude all new companies and you will probably end up with a better selection of competitively priced products from leading companies.
Now go through the list you made and see which products best match your target product.
Please note the suppliers’ minimum order quantity (MOQ). You can usually buy 500 items for a trial order.
Then sign up for free on Alibaba and send emails to targeted manufacturers. A total of five manufacturers should be enough to give you an idea of the price range.
Remember that you need to add value if you want the customer to buy your product and not someone else’s, so refer to the value attributes mentioned earlier.
Your letter could look like this (this is a letter for my polishing glove):
My name is [[Your name]]. I plan to add [[[your product]] to the range of products I sell through Amazon FBA.
After much research, I have come to the conclusion that your company, with its extensive manufacturing experience, could be an excellent supplier for these products. Could you please let me know if you can supply such a product?[[[Give the URL of your target product]] [[[List the things you want to add and see if they can do it]] and give me the answers below:
1. What is the price for 500 pieces?
2. Can you produce customized packaging? How much does it cost?
3. Can you give me a polishing cloth?
4. Can you bring 2 cleaning gloves and a cleaning cloth?
5. Do you have experience with Amazon FBA?
6. What is the lead time?
7. What are the dimensions of the product?
8. What color options are available?
I really hope we can build a mutually beneficial relationship.
Which questions you include in the letter depends on the value you want to add, so do thorough research and create a letter template that meets your needs.
Feel free to ask any questions you have – the companies will be happy to answer them.
Keep in mind that you may need to send 10 emails back and forth to work out all the details. It’s important not to do anything in haste, as a lack of detail can cost you dearly later on.

3. Shipping on Amazon FBA
At this point, it’s important to know how much it will cost to ship your products to one of Amazon’s warehouses.
I recommend you hire a local transportation company to help you with this.
Search Google for keywords like China freight forwarder or Amazon FBA freight forwarder.
Give them detailed information about your item, including its weight and dimensions, and they should give you an estimated price for shipping by air or sea.
Compare quotes and choose the company that meets your needs.
Now you have the product and you can deliver it to the Amazon
warehouse. What else is there to do?

The most common mistake made by people starting out on Amazon FBA is pricing.
I understand that there are many factors to consider, but you need to evaluate your profitability to avoid the disappointment of losing money.
Amazon offers a handy price calculator that you can use to determine the right price for an item and calculate your profit margin.
Simply search Amazon for an item similar to the one you want to sell and copy the ASIN number from the URL at the top of the page. Then enter this number in the calculator. I use a computer USB stick as an example.

The target price is the price at which you want to sell your product.
Shipping to Amazon – includes all shipping costs from the manufacturer to the shipping agency and from the agency to the Amazon fulfillment center you use.
Product cost – includes the price of the product and packaging.
Once you enter the competitor’s ASIN number and any associated costs, Amazon will calculate the fulfillment costs and give you a net profit margin.
You can play around with the calculator, but I recommend a profit margin of at least 30% to cover the advertising costs and ultimately make some money.
If you find that it will be difficult to make a profit, go back to the research stages and look for alternative products. But if everything looks good, read on.
So you got the right price. Now it’s time to order samples.
The samples will not have your custom packaging or branding as you need to verify that the product is high quality.
Use the shipping agency you found earlier to send samples from vendors to your agency, and they will combine them into one package to reduce costs.
Some companies offer free samples or refund the purchase price after ordering.
However, you may have to pay for shipping costs. The cost of sending a package to the United States for items weighing between 1 and 3 pounds can be as much as $40.
After receiving the samples, you should carefully inspect the product(s).
Also, ask your friends and family to honestly review your product as consumers.
Feel free to order a second sample if you want to make changes.
Trust me, caution pays off in the long run.
Amazon requires every item to have an EAN or UPC code.
You can buy them on eBay for a few bucks.
The manufacturers will send you the barcodes by email almost immediately after you place your order.
When they arrive, type them into Google or Amazon just to be sure and see if any items with the same barcode pop up.
This will tell you if they have already been used.
So you have the barcode(s) and
is happy with your product(s). What else is there to do?
7. Amazon FBA
Logo and packaging design
For just $5, you can order your logo design on Fiverr.
It is advisable to check with the United States Trademark Office to ensure that your chosen company/trade name has not been registered.
And if you think about the future, you can assume that one day your brand will be successful. So go to a domain registrar like GoDaddy to see if a URL with that name is still available.
Package design on Fiverr also starts at $5.
That’s why it’s called Fiverr!
Note that you can pay more than $5 for more complex designs.
Google packaging design, find a few you like and explain clearly to the designer what you want.
Sometimes you feel like you’re missing out on $5, so ask for exactly what you want.
And don’t forget to ask them to put a barcode on the package in addition to the country of origin.
Now that your product is beautifully packaged, what else can you do to ensure its success?

You are selling a service at a price you determine, not your time
Maintain anonymity – Fiverr allows you to remain anonymous and not reveal any of your personal or contact information
Upsell features. You can increase your sales on Fiverr by offering additional sales to your customers. For example, you can offer a shorter delivery period for an additional fee
Vendor Protection. Fiverr keeps you and your funds safe on the platform and helps you deal with unscrupulous customers
8. Quality control
Quality control is essential for Amazon’s FBA sellers.
A few negative reviews on a product or too many returns and your product listing, or even the seller’s account, can be permanently closed.
The above is particularly relevant when you are entering into a new relationship with a supplier. You cannot be 100% sure of the quality of the products that are delivered to you in bulk.
There are a number of different types of tests that can be performed on products.
First, you must pass the pre-shipment inspection conducted by the quality assurance company. What can be checked during pre-shipment inspections?
Packaging – the packaging can be checked for defects.
Functionality of the product – Test whether the products perform their primary functions.
Tagging – checks that Amazon tags have been added correctly.
Quantity – counts the number of items in the shipment.
Specialized test – you can create your own test and have it administered.
How much does it cost?
It is best to hire a quality assurance company to come to the factory and inspect the products on site.
One of the largest quality inspection companies in China is QIMA.
You can send an inspector to any factory in China within 48 hours for $309 per man-day, all inclusive.
So if you order 500 units, the cost per unit increases by about $0.61.
Before placing an order, you should also agree with the manufacturer what quality you want and what the consequences are if the quality does not meet your requirements.
Of course, you can also skip the middleman and have everything delivered to your home for inspection, but calculate the shipping costs in advance and see what’s best for you.
They can then conduct random checks on shipments to keep manufacturers in line without having to check every item.
So you have this great product. How can you convince people to buy it?
9. Product images
Images are an important element in getting a buyer’s attention on Amazon’s search results page.
First of all, it’s important to meet Amazon’s requirements for product images.
Second: Be creative and think about how you can make your shots better than the competition.
Imagine for a moment that you want to sell blind spot mirrors. The competition between the keywords you want to compete with is shown below.
The question is how to distinguish the main image of your product from these images.
This is not an easy task, so take the time to figure out how to do it.
You can start analyzing the other missing images.
Maybe you can mirror a brand new red Ferrari in front of your blind spot mirror.
Or you can add bonus items, such as. B. a set of cleaning cloths, and show them clearly in the main photo.
I hope this example gives you some ideas!
You can also upload a total of 9 images for your product. When a visitor lands on a page with a detailed product description, these images help persuade them to make a purchase.
In that sense, you can show
Product pictured in a relevant and realistic environment
Detailed presentation of weight/capacity/size
Product usage examples
Finally, you need to create product images.
If you have the skills, great!
If not, go back to Fiverr and maybe talk to the same designer who created your package. You can get a discount!
Moreover, there are services that allow you to submit your item and have Amazon FBA images created according to your specifications.
For example, you can take the Pow Photography!
Currently, they offer a free trial of photos so you can view them before you pay them to take all the photos for your product.
Now that you have the perfect product images, you need text to match.
10. Product descriptions
People search on Amazon because they want to buy something.
And they will find your product if their search terms match your product name or are linked to one of the fields in the product description.
So the first thing you need to do is research the keywords that people are searching for on Amazon.
For this kind of research, I prefer Sellics’ free program, Sonar.
Go to Amazon.com, find the ASIN number of one of your competitor’s products and type it into the Sonar search bar.
Click on the download button and you will get a list of all keywords used for this product.
Do the same with a few other products and you have a database of keywords you can use to describe your ads.
If you need a more versatile keyword research tool, you should try the Keywords Inspector.
The design of the site is a little dated, but it has a database of nearly half a billion keywords that you can use to your advantage.
You can also take advantage of their 7-day free trial and research your first product.
How to write product descriptions
Product descriptions include title, bullet points, search terms, product description and product features.
Headline – The main purpose of your headline is to attract the attention and clicks of your visitors. Put the most important keywords up front and use this header structure:
Brand + key words 2-4 + feature 1 + feature 2 + feature 3 + size/color
Example – Windshield Car Sunshade + Bonus Gift – Heat and sun protection, compact storage with strap, quick and easy installation, UV reflector | black/silver sides (59″ x 28″).
Bullet Points – Use up to 500 characters to describe the 5 features and benefits of your product.
Example – Quick installation : Simply stick the car sun visor to the inside of the windshield and use the car sun visor as an extra support.
Keywords – Amazon has background search fields where you can add additional keywords not already used in the title or bulleted list. They are not visible to the buyer, but you can add them when you list your products.
Example of face cream – moisturizer, night wrinkle, anti-aging…
Description – here you have the opportunity to further convince customers to buy your product. Write a user-friendly description and emphasize the benefits.
Product specifications are product-specific details that you enter when creating the ad. Make sure you fill in all relevant fields.
Now that you have described your product perfectly, the fun part begins –
11. Launching: How do I make my first sale?
Finally, you are ready to launch your product.
First, Amazon ranks your product based on your sales.
To stay ahead of your competitors and appear on the first page of searches for a particular keyword, you need to track their sales.
Where can I find information about the sale?
You can use a paid service like the JungleScout extension or the free version of Scope to see how many sales there have been for each product listing.
In this example I have entered the keyword brush. In this case, you need to sell about 200 brushes per day for at least two consecutive weeks to appear on the first page of the top results list.
That’s about 2,800 brushes, and that’s no small amount.
I would not recommend you apply to such an oversaturated market. Another example is the previously mentioned do-it-yourself headlight polishing kit for cars.
This time you have to make about 20 sales a day!
This is so much better!
So how do you make those sales, especially in the beginning?
Email list – about 2-4 months before the product launch, you need to create a buzz. The goal is to obtain a list of people who would be interested in purchasing your products. One way to do this is to create a group on Facebook and start sharing useful and practical tips, such as B. how to paint a wall, if you decide to sell a brush.
Coupons – there are companies like Snagshout or Vipon that connect brands with buyers of discounted products. In effect, you are offering your product on these platforms at a 50% discount. You may lose a little money, but if you make a sale of about 20 car headlight polishing kits a day, you can reach the first page of search results in 2 weeks.
Launch services – we haven’t tried it yet, but there is a company called Viral Launch that helps you launch your product and gives step-by-step instructions on how to do it correctly. The cost of the service starts at $350 for a single product launch.
One point that is often overlooked is that Amazon charges you more Karma points if you sell an item at full price rather than at a heavily discounted price.

12. How to get good product reviews
It used to be possible on Amazon to offer a free item in exchange for a product review.
However, those days are over and this practice now violates Amazon’s terms and conditions.
In 2021, the best way to get your first product reviews is to participate in Amazon’s early review program.
Basically, you pay $60, and Amazon encourages customers to leave a review of the product by giving them coupons for a few dollars off.
You send out emails to customers for a year or until you have 5 product reviews, whichever comes first. For more information on the program, visit this Amazon page.
Then, you can send follow-up emails to customers using services like Feedback Genius, which offers a free plan that lets you send 100 emails a month.
As part of this plan, send automated emails to each customer to find out if they are satisfied with the product they received.

13. Inventory Control : Reorganize the site
You don’t want a product to be out of stock after launch, as this will make Amazon unhappy and affect your organic rankings!
Example: First you order 500 items.
Let’s do the math:
If you start successfully and start selling 20 items a day, you will sell about 600 items a month.
Production depends on the manufacturer, but can sometimes take up to 30 days.
In addition, the delivery time must be taken into account. The delivery time by air is about 15 days, while the delivery time by ship is about 35 days.
So depending on the manufacturer, you may have to reorder within a few days of receiving the first batch, because 500 pieces just isn’t enough for 20 sales a day.
As you can see, it’s important to anticipate certain numbers if you want to avoid a second round.
Amazon FBA is very competitive. However, if you develop a disciplined approach to the types of products you sell, it’s a great way to make money and grow your business.
